A dreamy couples photoshoot a stone’s throw from Edinburgh
A relaxed couples photoshoot in Culross, Fife
A slow, sun-filled session in one of Scotland’s most charming villages. There’s such a cosy vibe to it and fun fact - I actually got married there myself! I just love that place. There’s something about Culross that feels a little foreign, like you’ve escaped to another country for the afternoon.Maybe it’s the quiet streets, or the way the light moves across the pale stone buildings, or just the fact that once you’re there, it doesn’t feel like you’re rushing anywhere.
This session started after a day of on and off rain. The kind of weather that makes you question whether to go ahead at all. But as often happens in Scotland, it shifted just in time. The clouds lifted, the sun came through softly, and the whole village felt calm and fresh.
Treating your couples or engagement shoot like a fun date to get the most wonderful images
From the beginning, I encouraged Anastasia and Antonio to treat the session like a date rather than a photoshoot. We walked, talked, stopped when something caught our attention. They held hands, laughed, wandered without thinking too much about the camera.
One of the simplest ways to avoid stiff or overly posed images is just to keep moving. Walking side by side, brushing shoulders, pausing to talk. Small things that you would do anyway.Lifestyle couples photography is built around this idea. It focuses on real interaction rather than fixed poses, which helps images feel relaxed and genuine. It also takes away that feeling of wondering what you are supposed to do.
Exploring Culross together
Culross is perfect for this kind of session. It is small enough to explore on foot, but full of little corners that feel completely different from one another. We wandered through:
quiet cobbled streets
soft, neutral-toned houses
hidden corners that catch the light beautifully
Then made our way down towards the pier, taking our time as we went. Nothing felt rushed, which makes such a difference in how a session feels.
A mix of quaint village backdrop and the drama of the water
By the time we reached the pier, the light had softened even more.
There’s something about being near the water that naturally slows everything down. Conversations get quieter, movement becomes more relaxed, and people stop thinking about being photographed. At that point, they had completely settled into it, if anything we were mostly focused on fitting the Scottish wind but the images that came from this were so dreamyyyyy.
Those are the moments I’m looking for.
An underrated gem for unique images, delicious treats and 10/10 vibes
One of the best things about choosing Culross is that it doesn’t need to just be a photoshoot. It can easily turn into a full, relaxed day out.
It’s less than an hour from Edinburgh, which makes it perfect if you want something slower without going too far.
Before or after your session, you could stop at The Merkat for some excellent coffee (I had the best cookie of my life there the other day!!!) and a mooch around their highly aesthetically pleasing shop at the back of the cafe, or visit Culross Palace and its gardens, which feel quiet and tucked away from everything.
Even just walking through the village without a plan is part of the experience. There are small details everywhere, and the pace naturally slows you down.
Keeping things natural, not cheesy
A lot of couples and families worry that a photoshoot will feel forced or cringe.
And yeah we’re not professional models here, that’s fine. You’ll feel a little unsure for the first few minutes, but I promise I it will be fun. The focus won’t be on creating dramatic or overly posed moments but on noticing the smaller, quieter interactions that already exist between you. I’ll prompt you when needed to create movement and images that feel honest, relaxed and warm without trying too hard.
Thinking about your own session?
If you’re drawn to natural, unposed photography and like the idea of something that feels more like a relaxed experience than a formal shoot, Culross is a beautiful place to start. It’s a little off the beaten path when it comes to photography, a little hidden gem in Fife.
And if you’re based in or visiting Edinburgh, it’s an easy and worthwhile escape for something a little quieter. If that sounds like your kind of thing, you can get in touch to check availability.
